The demand for food has increased in our community and Union Mission's 50 boxes per month in 2010, has now risen to gifting about 600 boxes per month to families in need.

The increase has placed stress upon the Mission with increased need for finances and staff. We have determined that those who receive, and those who give, need a change in the process. We believe we have a solution and that solution begins February 1.

Beginning in February our community is invited to join one of six Food Co-ops that will meet twice monthly at Union Mission. Participants will not only enjoy no food lines, but will also have opportunity to receive two food boxes per month in the new Food Co-op. The Co-op will be run by participants who will elect officers within the Co-op and fill their own boxes at each meeting. Dues of $2.00 per meeting will be expected from each participant. The dues paid at the Co-op are not used for the purchase of food. Food will still come from donations received into our pantry from the community and other sources. "We simply pass on food donations to the public to those in need." said LaCount Anderson, Executive Director of Union Mission. "The new food Co-op will enable us to not only give out the food donations in a more effective manner, but will also give recipients opportunity to receive food with dignity and participate in educational opportunities that will occur within the Co-op meetings." he stated.

To enroll in a Union Mission Food Cooperative is easy. Participants should come by the Mission at 1310 Roanoke Ave. Roanoke Rapids, NC to sign up for one of the six cooperatives. The Co-ops will meet on the second and fourth week of each month (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Should someone not desire to enroll in the food cooperative we will still offer a monthly food distribution. Union Mission is open Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. The public is welcome to join in this innovative food distribution opportunity.

Union Mission Presents March 10

Click this link to find out about our upcoming fundraising concert

http://tinyurl.com/83n57ph

Order tickets Online : Many volunteers had arrived early to help with the Annual Thanksgiving Community Meal. As I moved into the kitchen area volunteers were busy preparing plates to be taken to Becker Manor and UM Cook, Dee Sloop, was busy giving instruction to portion sizes of each plate. Melissa Moseley was busy orienting our new volunteers who had arrived from Littleton, Nashville, Dunn and towns located in the Roanoke Valley. From my perspective the whole event moved along like a finely tuned machine as we fellowshipped together with friends and family. I loved seeing families sit down together to eat and just enjoy being at Union Mission. When all was complete Union Mission set a new record of serving 1,110 people. This is our 60th year as an organization and it was a wonderful site to see so many come together to thank God for His blessings. Thanks to all who sacrificed to volunteer. The minister was away and I enjoyed hearing from the president of the local university. In the sermon, the president of this large university was talking about homeless people and the need for the Christian church to become more involved. He gave an illustration from his own local church that is located in the downtown area across the street from the University. I was inspired by his illustration relating to the fact that homeless people would come into the doors of his local church and worship on Sunday. The illustration continued to state that the homeless visitors were comfortable on the back pew of the church.

This story has haunted me for a long time now. What haunts me is the fact that these people are recognized by this university president as “homeless.” Apparently the individuals with whom he identifies as “homeless” are in shabby clothes, and appear to be the stereotypical picture of which we have all become accustomed. This thought has occurred to me. Why would a regular attender to a worship service continue to look “homeless?” Is it that we tolerate the “look” and are happy to see a homeless person in our worship sanctuaries but are not willing to do anything about helping that person get some new clothes? Further why would we allow a homeless person to sit on the back row of our sanctuary without reaching out to that human being? Why wouldn’t we assist her in finding a place to live so she would not be homeless?

Here is my struggle today. Are our Christian antennas that dull to those around us? Are we so accustomed to seeing that person and recognize them as just part of the landscape? Have we lost the compassion for helping the human being who needs a place to stay and clothes to wear? Why is it that there are visibly homeless people attending our churches? Once we have identified a person in need, why is it we don’t take the next step and do something? I reflect upon the story Jesus told about the Good Samaritan. Before the Samaritan arrived on the scene of the beaten and naked man, there were two “church” people who came before him; people who were unable to see the need or were too busy to stop and help. Maybe they just didn’t “see” the man. He was a part of the landscape. There is a great book by John Ashman entitled Invisible Neighbors. I love the subtitle: “If you don’t see them, you’re not looking.”

LaCount Anderson
It is my pleasure and privilege to lead the work of the Mission during this historic time. Our theme this year is based upon an old gospel song: "In Times Like These." It tells us that in times like these we need a Savior; our anchor. This anchor is Jesus. Every day someone comes into Union Mission with a need. Many times that need is spiritual. We offer an invitation to Christ to everyone who enters the doors of the Mission.

Thank you for your continued support of our work. Our recent birthday celebration is a testimony to the support of the residents of the Roanoke Valley. A truly memorable experience for all of us who came. Thank you to our Board of Directors under the leadership of Mr. Bruce Manning. Kathryne Hamill and her team of decorators did a splendid job. Anna Anderson and "One Voice" inspired us with music. Our speaker Mike Dore, from Raleigh Rescue Mission inspired us with his testimony of the ministry of Union Mission. The video presentation prepared by Bruce Manning left us all inspired to do even more. I thank each of you for the financial gifts to the continued support of Union Mission and do hope to see you drop by for a visit sometime in the future. Over the last 60 years we have been reaching the Roanoke Valley with the love of Christ. Homeless men and women have been served as well as community members receiving services from Union Mission. Thanks to the generosity of our community members, businesses, and churches we have been able to provide quality ministry to people who are in need.

On Thursday, September 22 at 6:00 PM at The Centre (campus of Halifax Community College) we will gather to think about the past, present, and dream to the future. Mr. Mike Dore of The Raleigh Rescue Mission will be our featured speaker and we will have music provided by "One Voice" of Rosemary Baptist Church.

We invite you to be a part of this exciting event. To obtain reservations simply call 537-3372 ex. 29. We invite you to call us and join in the celebration.

- LaCount Anderson
Executive Director

Residential Men help harvest food for those in need

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4rMRJsFwo-w/TjqNU5EdfLI/AAAAAAAAAEs/3G5vf50q8JU/s320/283519_2342407843259_1341867379_32867654_2989229_n%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636973273664027826" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eYGqNsPrT8I/TjqNPxsT8UI/AAAAAAAAAEk/M7iVro1rYr4/s320/267348_2342407483250_1341867379_32867653_230711_n%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636973185784344898" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UwLRX-CC2og/TjqNKSdjmbI/AAAAAAAAAEc/ZW6IxY4T9iI/s320/251421_2342409163292_1341867379_32867657_7951962_n%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636973091501611442" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3WmacfAldd0/TjqNFbgzFJI/AAAAAAAAAEU/uxVtLHZLFSU/s320/226116_2342408323271_1341867379_32867655_8294138_n%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636973008031782034" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ajwiOYUh3cw/TjqM-ByjcKI/AAAAAAAAAEM/uGKisD-P04g/s320/226105_2342409643304_1341867379_32867658_6808040_n%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636972880867848354" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mDsPVYfmPzo/TjqM3UoVEsI/AAAAAAAAAEE/wkzuvdshOhE/s320/184039_2342408763282_1341867379_32867656_4716638_n%255B1%255D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636972765666153154" />
Our residential men traveled to Hobgood NC this week to harvest Corn and Okra to be placed in boxes. We want to thank Spring United Methodist Church, Spring, Virginia for sponsoring Union Mission for one day. The membership of 63 members, in their Sunday School, discussed several options to help Union Mission. One of the members asked "I wonder what it would cost to run the mission for one day?" When the answer was given the group said "We are just a small group. We don't know if we can put together that kind of money." One member stood up in the meeting and challenged the group to meet the goal. This week Rev. Anderson received a phone call from Steve Howell of Spring United Methodist church informing that he would deliver a check to Union Mission this week.

Spring United Methodist Church wants to challenge you! Can you, in faith, sponsor a day of ministry at Union Mission? It is a great idea! Thank you Spring United Methodist Church!

Union Mission Partners With Faith House

As you may know by now, Faith House of Enfield, Inc. has agreed to partner with Union Mission in cooperative work with women and children who are homeless. We are excited about our new partnership in that this will give us the opportunity to reach out to women and children in our ministry.

This past week, due to the kindness of a local church, we were able to supply Faith House with a new cooking range for their kitchen. It is through the networking and partnering, like this, through other organizations that we will be able to assist Faith House with her needs. We are hopeful to have a volunteer in place who will come to us from the membership of a local church in Enfield. Other plans are for LaCount Anderson, Executive Director, to join the Board of Directors of Faith House. His involvement with the Board will be invaluable to knowing how we can assist. "We will move slowly and only through the leadership of God as we begin this process of partnering. Our desire is to make a positive impact for our Lord in Enfield through whatever we can do to help our friends at Faith House," said LaCount Anderson recently.

Donations to this ministry are already being accepted at Union Mission from the community. It is thought that we will have much support from the general public relating to our new holistic ministry to those in need.

A mobile home has been donated to Union Mission as a transitional residence for women and children. We are now awaiting a location for the home and the plan is to have it fully operational by September, 2011. We are seeking partnerships from churches and other organizations to remodel and furnish the house.

Food Thoughts

The seeds are in the ground and thanks to the recent rain we are seeing sprouts bursting forth. We are excited about our garden this year. Wilson Perry, one of our phase 3 residents, has been hard at work with John Haverstock these past few weeks.

We look forward to seeing the produce forming and then harvesting in a few weeks. We plan to add these food items to the food boxes we give away on a daily basis. If you would like to participate in helping us with our garden this year please feel free to get in touch with me: director@umrr.org . There is always much to do and we surely could use your help.

On another food subject, I am pleased to report that The Emergency Food Assistance Program is well under way. Many are receiving the food they need and we are grateful for this opportunity to assist the NC Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC. To learn more about the program contact Melissa Manning at: melissa@umrr.org.

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped us with our recent food distribution. We were able to make 250 families happy with a 50 pound food box. We are grateful to WMU of North Carolina for their help in supplying volunteers for the distribution.

In Times Like These

There is an old gospel song I remember from my childhood. It is called: “In Times Like These.” It speaks of the by passed era of World War II and is a song of encouragement to people to turn to Christ, “In Times Like These.” It speaks of hanging on to God who is our anchor and the fact that He is the only one who can help us during “Times Like These.” I can’t help but think that old gospel song has merit during these current times in which we face as a community. I am thankful that I can turn to God for help during the current financial crisis.

I wanted to write this letter to say thank you to our community for all of the support of time, energy, and finances we at Union Mission have received in these past few months. Churches, civic groups and individuals have been so kind in supporting our efforts in ministering to people who come through our doors for help.

This letter is to encourage you to keep on giving to your church. These places of worship are so important to our community. "In times like these” we need to hear a word from the Lord as we worship together weekly. Our churches partner with Union Mission in assisting in the needs of others. Thank you to our spiritual leadership in this community.

Finally, I want to make our community aware of Union Mission’s current needs.. We had to purchase a truck to pick up and deliver items. Our old truck finally just wouldn’t make it down the road any longer. We found a used vehicle and need to pay for it. Secondly, the expenses of the winter months have been quite challenging and the ongoing need for services from us have never been greater. If you can make an extra donation to Union Mission in the coming days it would be appreciated by all of us. And of course “if your clothes are no longer becoming to you, we would like for them to be coming to us.” Your donations of clothing help us provide for those who need clothes as well as give us opportunity to sell clothes in our stores to provide mission dollars to help those in need.

Thank you community for your support and, in advance, for your future support of Union Mission.

LaCount L. Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids does not waste anything. We recycle old and tattered clothing for use as rags. With warmer temperatures happening you may be thinking "spring cleaning." Don't forget about Union Mission as you begin to discard old and unusable clothes.

We also take clothes you have that are still good but, maybe, aren't being used by you any longer. These clothes are given to people in need, to our homeless resident men, or sold for mission dollars at our Clothing Store. Feel free to bring them by the store for processing.

Please Note: We do not have recepticals located around town. LaCount L. Anderson

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C.—Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids is facing a critical shortfall in donated income and is appealing to the community for support. Rev. LaCount Anderson, the Mission’s executive director, reports financial gifts fell significantly behind budget in January and continue to decline while the need for the Mission’s services—especially its food-box distribution program—has never been greater.
“Requests for emergency food assistance across the country rose by 24 percent in 2010, and that reflects the alarming trend we’re seeing right here in the Roanoke Valley,” Anderson said, citing a report released by the U.S. Conference on Mayors. He attributes the growing need to the lingering effects of the sluggish economy.
“Layoffs, reduced wages, foreclosures—they continue to take a toll on our hard-working individuals and families. Many of these are people who have battled to maintain their independence as long as they could but are losing the fight. They live in fear and frustration as they wonder how they’ll feed their kids next week or if their next paycheck will be their last. We have to be here to help if and when the worst happens.”
Anderson said the Mission is also challenged to cover high costs of heating and utilities as the weather grows colder and more homeless men seek safe shelter.
“We need to raise $20,000 in the next few weeks to ensure there’s no decline in our level of outreach to the Roanoke Valley, or that we won’t be forced to cut some services altogether when they’re needed most,” Anderson said. “I’m confident that as our Mission friends and compassionate community members learn of this financial deficit, they’ll do all they can to help us help their neighbors.”
Donations can be made online at www.umrr.org or mailed to Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids at 1310 Roanoke Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870. “As always, we’re truly grateful for every gift and prayer,” Anderson said.

For additional information about the Mission’s year-round programs and services, call Rev. LaCount Anderson at 252-537-3372 or visit www.umrr.org.

Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids exists to meet, through the Power of Jesus Christ, the needs of the whole person—spiritual, educational, emotional, physical, vocational and social—so hurting individuals may become fully functioning members of society.

Reflection on Youth

Recently I attended a sad event. It was a funeral of a young man who didn’t have to die. He died due to his own decision to use alcohol and it was a fatal decision. At his memorial service I looked around the room and saw more than a hundred of his friends and associates who lived a similar lifestyle.

I work daily with those who have made poor choices. They come to me for help in that their decisions have left them homeless and without money. Their choice to use self-destructive behavior; using alcohol or drugs is a common thread to their dilemma. Another common thread is that many of my clients are young men and women. Just today I turned on the evening news and witnessed the breaking news of yet another senseless crime committed by a young 22 year old who decided to open gun fire on a political gathering killing 6 and injuring another dozen people.

For just a bit my thoughts began to question our society and what we are teaching our youth. “Is this why I am seeing so many young adults who find themselves in trouble? Are we failing to teach our children basic truths that we were taught in our younger years?” I began to ask.

As I continued to reflect upon these events my thoughts began to take a positive turn. I began thinking about that group of Wake Forest University Students who worked with me at the homeless shelter recently. The group of Campbell University students who gave up their spring break to travel with me to Atlanta, Ga. to assist refugees in a poverty situation. The young Chowan University music student who was motivated to play a concert at his church to raise money for that homeless shelter, and the joy I witnessed when he presented to the shelter the large sum of money from his concert. I am reminded of the many young adult men and women I have been fortunate to work along side as they have begun their career in ministry. I am thankful to know the new Global Field Personnel we commissioned last summer at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s General Assembly. Men and women at much sacrifice have taken up residence in places all over our world, raising their own support, to be the presence of Christ. Men and women who will drive a hundred miles to help serve a meal at our homeless shelter because they want to be a part of helping another human being. Men and women with no thought of how much they will be paid taking on low wage, full time employment in places that serve “the least of these.”

It is truly sad to witness the waste of a young life, but it gives me joy and comfort in the future knowing there are young men and women who do actually get it. Men and women who are going to change our society for the better and who are an inspiration to some of us who work along side them. My young friends, you know who you are, thank you for your commitment and your dedication. I feel the world is a better place because of you and I am proud to be your friend and colleague.

We’re so deeply grateful for your recent gifts to Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids. This is also the time of year when working-poor parents often struggle to meet the basic needs of clothing and food for their children . . . when the homeless battle cold nights on the streets. For so many of our neighbors, Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas presents are only wishful thinking or memories of better times.

Yet through the compassion and generosity of your partnership, we can help our guests and residents—and struggling men, women and children within the community—experience the joy of the season. And we can meet their needs for food, safe shelter and other life essentials all year-round.

If they could, I know the desperate souls we serve would want to thank you for making this season a special one. On their behalf, please accept my gratitude for supporting our ministry with your selfless gifts and faithful prayers.

With gratitude,
LaCount Anderson

Shop at Belk to help Union Mission on November 6

Need is great, but community response greater in Roanoke Valleyby Stephen Hemelt, Managing Editor, The Daily Herald

There is no doubt that times are tough for those in the Roanoke Valley. Word from those who run Union Mission of Roanoke Rapids shows the people of the Roanoke Valley are even tougher.

The Rev. LaCount Anderson told The Daily Herald the mission helped 700 people with emergency food in the first four weeks of September, a drastic increase because the mission normally serves 200 to 300 people in that time frame.

LaCount described the need as “crazy” in Sunday’s newspaper.

The mission, located in the 1300 block of Roanoke Avenue, serves one meal a day to the public and offers food boxes, which can contain canned food.

“We’re just very pleased with the community for their help,” LaCount said. “I think we are seeing people who normally don’t visit us. Those donations from Scouts, high schools and various church groups are really helpful to what we’re doing. I just want to thank the citizens who have donated, and I want them to know their donations have really helped their fellow citizens in the Roanoke Valley.”

Union Mission operates completely on donations, so it is a testament to the enduring spirit of the community that Union Mission has met its recent needs, which are up as much as 300 percent.

It seems all too many of us are but one cutback away from being the one who can help to the one who needs help.

It’s great to know there are many wonderful people who work with the less fortunate in our very own community.

There is also a larger network of people who help supply those on the front lines. We are grateful for them all.

Anyone interested in helping the mission can call 252-537-3372 or e-mail LaCount at director@umrr.org.
From time to time I am asked if there are items I need for our ministry. I wanted to share one item that is probably the most important item for our work in poverty. Bibles. We have the wonderful opportunity to share the word of God with homeless people as well as families in crisis. Opportunities avail at local prisons too.

If you would like to provide a Bible we have some specifications:

The NIV translation is a good translation for teaching homeless men.
Large print is always helpful to our students in that many in poverty have poor eyesight.
Hard cover Bibles are needed.
We talk a lot about the sayings of Jesus, so if you can find a red letter edition that would be helpful.
If you would like to provide a Bible toward our ministry please get in touch : From volunteerism, to donations of food, clothes, discarded clothes, and financial donations. This has been a challenging summer for Union Mission in the area of finances and we do appreciate your demonstration of love.

I wanted to thank Calvary Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids for the donation of produce that we received on August 29. This produce went to neighborhoods and people in our area who really need the food. A thank you to Rosemary Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids for the donation of two new dressing rooms in our clothing store. This new space will aid our shoppers as they make decisions on clothing to purchase.

You have no doubt read in the paper, heard the radio commercial, or seen our flyer about our recycling program. We are able to recycle old, torn, and unusable clothes as well as leather goods like pocketbooks and belts. These worn out items can be recycled for mission dollars that help us with our ministry to the community. We don't throw anything away here at Union Mission. Everything has a use and we thank you for remembering us next time you have disposable items. Don't trash them, donate them to Union Mission. Remember: "If your clothes aren't becoming to you; we would like them to be coming to us!"

LaCount Anderson
Executive Director

Urgent Prayer Request for Hector Villanueva

Our friend Larry Hovis sent this letter to me yesterday. I pass it on to you and ask you to pray for this minister of the Gospel. One of our pastors in the Hispanic Network was arrested last Thursday. Hector Villanueva has a green card, a social security card, legal resident since the 1980s, and has been in the United States since he was three. We want to thank you for your continued prayer support of our work here in northeastern NC. This blog is to give you current prayer requests to help when you pray for us. Please pass these requests on to your church on our behalf. We thank you for your partnership in our ministry.

Last week was particularly difficult for LaCount in his work at Union Mission. For 18 months he has been working with two men who have made wonderful progress in getting their lives back together. On two independent occasions, on Monday, each of these men had to be asked to leave the shelter. This was particulary painful for LaCount in that he has developed strong relationships with the two men. The two men are now on the street. Both men are capable of taking care of themselves but the fear is that they will lapse into the old habits which landed them in the shelter at the beginning. Pray that they will stay connected to the churches they have been attending and that God will use this event to strengthen them. Pray for direction in their lives.

Over the past few months we have been asked by many people about the idea of providing transitional housing for women and children here in our community. We believe this is a great idea: to provide temporary housing for women and children who are homeless. The idea is that a house would be available for a family that is struggling, and that proper counseling and support be provided to the residents of the house for a defined period of time. We believe that since there have been several who have inquired from different places, this is of God. We ask you to pray that God will give us all wisdom as we seek to provide the kind of assistance to those who are in need of transitional housing.

Finally, we are very excited about the monthly food distribution to residents of Halifax and Northampton counties. We are in a period of time that food donations are low and we are praying for God to provide more food for the September 22 food distribution. Normally people, at Thanksgiving, are compelled to give food to shelters and it is greatly appreciated. But right now there are still families in need of food during September and October. It was a typical hot, summer Monday morning a few weeks ago, when we opened the door. As we opened the door sleepy eyed children from the community came to participate in Union Mission's very first Vacation Bible School. The whole Mission felt alive as the songs and laughter filled the space. Children were making craft items; they heard Bible stories; and even acted out drama as they learned about Jesus. We are grateful to volunteers who came to teach the children about Jesus that week. Some came from a great distance and others came from around the corner to be the leadership team for the week. Smiles and songs were penetrating the multi-purpose room of the Mission. Some 71 children came through Union Mission's door to experience Vacation Bible School 2010. As the week ended we were sad to say good bye. However, we look forward to the next event at Union Mission to help children learn more of Jesus.
When I met them several years ago, they were homeless. She had delivered five children, all of whom had been taken by the state. He was a crackhead living off her food stamps, who made spending money by turning tricks for the white-collar types that cruise the homeless camps looking for sex.

He has several kids by different women. She has a two pack a day habit. They had a baby together – his family was fostering that kid for the state while they “got things under control”. Then they found out she was pregnant. Again.

Luckily (!) about this time, they were on a city bus that hit a car. As a result, they got a small settlement. They paid a year’s worth of rent on a place infested with fleas & roaches & moved in just in time for her to deliver the baby. The state let her keep this one.

They still had no money, no job. They had food stamps & whatever church they were stringing along for help that week. He was still turning tricks & she was selling her food stamps and WIC allotment. Apparently, the state was impressed by their industry & let them have custody of their other child, who is now three. The last time I was over there, the kid was watching a VHS tape of New Jack City & eating a cold hot dog while a roach ran across his foot.

Last week, I get a phone call the day before I go out of town. He ran off with the neighbor, with whom he has been having an affair. The neighbor is HIV positive. And the lease on the apartment runs out at the end of August.

Her mental health caseworker & I talked to her for hours, encouraging her to file for child support & get a restraining order. She said she will. While I am out of town, he moves back in with her. And why not – it’s almost time to get food stamps again. It’s hard to blame her – the thought of being alone with two kids has her terrified.

Loving these people is not easy for me. It is easy for me to say that they are where they are because of the choices they have made, or their moral failures, or whatever. But if I only love people who are lovable – well, even terrorists do that.

My Evangelical friends complain I don’t talk enough about my faith in these letters. Well, understand that the only thing that keeps me answering the phone when she calls is my belief that she is valuable to the God I profess to believe in. And the only reason I am not filled with total despair for those babies is the assurance found in the ancient prayer that one day it will be “on earth as it is in heaven.”

But until that day comes, I don’t know anything to do but to try my best to love them, even when it is not easy. And to pray really, really hard.

They could use your prayers, too. Truth be told, so could I.

Love Wins. a community service center where food is distributed daily; an educational center where people, especially children come to learn. It is my pleasure to serve as Executive Director of this fine center and I welcome you to come by for a visit or to serve. We are always in need of donations of food, money, clothing and time. In the coming weeks there are two events you may be interested in providing a donation. 1. On July 12-16 we will be hosting our very first Vacation Bible School from 9-noon daily. Volunteers are needed to transport children as well as participate in leadership. If you know of a child who would participate please make arrangements by bringing the child. Pre registration is by calling 252-537-3372. 2. On July 21 we will be distributing 1600 cans of food to some 200 families. Your donation of food is needed and we thank you in advance for your support. Food donations can be brought by Union Mission daily from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Our residential men are working to provide the management of the garden. Soon vegatables will be harvested and sold in a vegatable stand near our clothing store.

We are completing our upstairs renovation stage 1 that was started in April. Neal Wilcox is a very special person to us at Union Mission. Recently he and Barbara shared her health issue with us and have asked us for prayer. I have recently received information as to how you can receive updates from a website on Barbara's condition and I want to share this information with you:

Visit this website in two easy ways:

1. Visit the CaringBridge website by clicking the link below.
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/barbarawilcox

2. Enter the website name, barbarawilcox, at www.CaringBridge.org.

Through this website you can:

• Keep up to date.
• Leave a message in the guestbook.
• Receive e-mail notifications when the journal is updated.

If you wish to continue to receive e-mails when the journal is updated, you can check the box where it states "I want to receive Journal update notification e-mails" and then enter your e-mail address. Or you can simply check the website periodically for updates.

Thanks for your prayers for the Wilcoxs

LaCount Anderson

Untitled

This group of 22 individuals from the Greensboro, NC area have been teaching music and Bible stories to children after school. The group will continue their ministry with Union Mission through this coming Wednesday. Monday will be busy with the children and in preparation for the monthly food distribution. Tuesday will be Food distribution day, completing work on the facilities, and saying good bye to the children. We are truly thankful for these fine friends who have given so much to Union Mission.

2. I am thankful for the wonderful time of fellowship, food, and inspiration we received at the Union Mission banquet on Friday evening. Some 325 people gathered to celebrate the ministry of this fine institution. I am thankful to those who planned the event and worked to make it not only a time of celebration but also of worship.

3. I am thankful for Bethlehem Baptist, Littleton Baptist, and Enterprise Baptist who have worked hard to paint strategic rooms at Union Mission. The spirit of those working in the community last Saturday and this coming Saturday is truly inspirational.

4. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to serve our Lord in this setting.

LaCount Anderson

A few nights on the street didn't serve him well as our temperatures have been cold. After a good meal, his health seemed to decline a bit more. We sent him to the hospital where we were hopeful that he could get the care he needed.

He came by today to tell me thanks for helping him that very cold day. It turns out he was in process of having a stroke and the hospital saved his life. Cold weather is not good for folks out on the street. This man is still on the street but knows we will help him if he comes by.

This past week with the high winds, the wind chill factor was treacherous. We had 3 men come into the shelter. I was able to provide a warm place to stay; it turns out two of these men decided that I had something to offer and they are willing to listen.
I have been touched by two events that have taken place just this week. First, I sent out an appeal to our Churches about a specific need for the Faith House in Enfield, NC. It has turned out that Faith House had run out of LP Gas during this cold weather and their gas bill was staggering to say the least. In just a few hours I began to hear from our churches and promises of financial help began to come my way. In two days we began to get firm commitments of amounts to be sent and I am thankful to God's People for stepping up and helping these fine folks. We haven't reached the goal as of yet, but I am confident that God will provide for Faith House's need in due time.

Union Mission, in Roanoke Rapids, also had a breakdown in their heating system. We published the need in the quarterly newsletter and just today we received enough donations to pay the repair bill. I am pleased to tell you that once again the money for the repair came from churches in the community. God's people doing God's work.

It is hard work to run homeless shelters and there are always challenges that come our way. I am thankful that we depend upon God for his provision. I am thankful that God's people are taking the lead in partnering with us to do ministry to the poor and needy. What I am observing is Biblical. Thanks be to God!

I am truly amazed at the giving of God's people to our work. Many thanks to dear friends in Ahoskie who came to work so hard in putting together food boxes for distribution last week; they along with other friends from Roanoke Rapids put together some 250 boxes of food weighing about 50 pounds each. Thanks to the many volunteers who worked to distribute the food the next day.

I am grateful to the children and the teenagers at Murfreesboro Baptist Church for their welcome of me last evening. It was my pleasure to talk about what God is doing at Union Mission. I was particularly impressed with the maturity of the questions that were asked. We enjoyed role play of the "Good Samaritan" story and then discussed how each of us can follow the lesson of the Good Samaritan. I felt compassion from the children and teenagers as they sincerely wanted to know about the homeless people with whom I work. A great surprise to me was the wonderful gift of toiletry items for those who need it. My car is stocked full and I look forward to delivering the items to Union Mission soon.

We are grateful to Enterprise Baptist Church who plan to come and work on a couple of rooms at Union Mission in May; we are grateful to Pleasant Garden Baptist Church who will be coming to help us with music, Bible teaching, and facility repair; we are thankful to Murfreesboro Baptist Church who have a desire to come in March to assist with a project. Future groups later in the summer will be coming from as far as Tennessee and Indiana.

We will be developing a Community Garden in Roanoke Rapids and Buies Creek this spring. We concluded our work with Nick and I had not seen nor heard from him since early 2008.

I remember our first meeting and how shocked I was to find this man had been in prison since he was 15 years old. He had been sexually abused while in prison and had a host of problems. I also remember he was a difficult young man to work with due to his past history.

When I received his call today I was delighted to hear his voice. His voice was confident as he said “Rev. I am reminded of the story in the Bible about the little boy and the loaves and fishes. This was a miracle of God's provision. We ran out of food due to the positive response of our community and our volunteers. We worked hard and challenges were met in a positive way. We ended the day pretty tired but you know, 1600 people received a plate of food from Union Mission that day. That was more than twice the response from last Thanksgiving. We will do the same December 22. Please join us. God provided.

Our showers are complete. What a blessing to see where inadequate, temporary, and leaking showers once stood; a beautiful facility for our men. Thanks to Major Hatchell, some of our men, and the community for stepping up and helping us make the long overdue repairs to our facility. We are working toward a higher standard of ministry than has ever been offered at Union Mission. Thank you for your help. God provided.

Union Mission serves women, children, and men. We have in the past offered a program for homeless men and are currently working toward that ministry in a stronger way than ever before. The need is very great to reach out to men in our community. I receive some 15 calls per week from men wanting to utilize the services of Union Mission. The calls keep coming, and we are doing our best to help as much as we can. Women and Children receive food boxes, bread and pastry, and counseling from our Intake department every day. We offer chapel each day and an evening meal that Women and children enjoy. Plans are to further programming for women and children in 2010. We partner with Faith House in Enfield as a woman's shelter and are building relationships with others who help homeless women and children. Thanks for the food donations and the volunteers who participate in Chapel each day. We are able to serve women, children, and men thanks to you. God provided.

I am receiving Christmas presents from churches in north eastern NC and health kits all for our residents. Thank you for partnering with Union Mission in meeting their personal needs. Meeting needs is the beginning of sharing Jesus Christ with people. Once we meet the need, then they will listen to our Gospel message. God Provided.

We are anxious to meet you. Please come by for a visit.

LaCount Anderson
Acting Director

Thankfulness

<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; The Union Mission will continue this practice of giving out bags of groceries as long as we have food available.

I am grateful to Gloria Caudle of The Faith House, who through their ministry in Enfield, NC, gave out food and dinners last week. We are thankful to have the opportunity to partner with Faith House; a shelter for women and children.

Murfreesboro Baptist Church has gifted The Union Mission with knitted hats. We have received a large box of hats from the church and will receive another box of hats to give to those in need this coming week. Thank you dear friends for your generosity.

Showers have been installed at Union Mission for the improvement of the bathroom. Due to the generosity of churches and individuals, the men’s program will be strengthened by more participants because of the improved shower facility.

It is indeed a privilege to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in northeastern NC. font-family: Arial;">I had the unique opportunity to speak to the congregation at Reynoldson Baptist Church today. My day started early and my first session at the church was with a wonderful group of teenagers. We discussed being a missionary and then I spoke to them about my work with Union Mission in Roanoke Rapids, NC. I have the joy of working with the mission and assisting in the ministry there. As I spoke about the work a young man interrupted me and said “Did I hear you on the Radio this week? Your voice sounds like the guy on the radio talking about Union Mission.” I confessed that indeed it was me he heard. He said “I gave the Union Mission $38.00 after I heard about the work.” I was stunned. This nice young man appeared to be about 16 years old. As we continued to talk about serving God I silently thanked God that I was in the presence of these teenagers.

On Friday four pick up trucks arrived from the high school. These trucks were full of canned goods that had been collected by the students, themselves, for the Union Mission.

At this Thanksgiving time I am grateful for young lives that are hearing God’s voice to help the poor and needy. These young men and women are the future leaders of our towns and communities here in eastern NC. On second thought, they are not the future of our towns and communities; they are the present. Thank you young men and women for setting the example for the rest of us.

I am so glad that we live in a country that takes a day to say Thanks Be To God. I am equally excited to be a part of Union Mission. For allowing me to be a part of the great ministry that has existed in Roanoke Rapids since 1951.

Last evening I was talking to some of the men who are staying here. The comment was made by one of them. "I feel called to be here." That comment blesses my heart. To think that someone from the street feels a since of calling to be involved in the ministry of Union Mission. You see, those who live here work here and are a part of the larger ministry to the community. We are a family and we work somewhat like a family. Being a part of the Union Mission family is something with which to be Thankful.

On Wednesday November 24 we will be offering to our community a Thanksgiving meal. It is our way of sharing with our larger family; the community. I hope you will come by and visit. We begin at 11:00 and conclude at 5:30. I look forward to meeting you here.

May God bless you and your family this season.

Rev. We plan to keep a listing of needs and prayer requests here as well as share stories relating to the ministry at Union Mission.

Current Need:
During the summer we had to close down our Men's Residential Program due to the need to improve the bathroom facilities in the Men's Dormatory. Here is what we need:

1. Three showers to replace the broken showers.
2. Paint job in the bathroom
3. New floor covering.

In pricing we are discovering that the showers can be replaced for about $1000.00.

If you are interested in this project please get in touch.

Upcoming Events:

Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
