Annual Thanksgiving Meal Wednesday Before Thanksgiving

For well over 20 years Union Mission has invited her neighbors and friends to the Annual Thanksgiving Community Meal.  This year promises to be the usual great time of fellowship with each other; rich and poor, Thanking God for his blessings upon us. 

We are trying something new this year.   We have, for several years, had a large number of willing volunteers and have also experienced some frustration in coordination of our volunteer force.  This year we plan to work with a volunteer sign-up process so that we will know who is coming and at what time.  We think this will be a better way to proceed and will make the experience more successful.

Update on Room At The Inn

Last November, with the help of our community, we purchased a house adjacent to Union Mission for the purposes of reaching out to homeless women and children.   We have been in a remodeling process since then, renovating the house to be fit for an exciting ministry that has been a dream for about four years.   Thanks to the many efforts of churches, businesses, individuals, and organizations we are beginning to see “the light at the end of the tunnel.”    We have had many challenges along the way and we are happy to announce that soon the house will be ready for occupancy.   Our Board of Directors has been extremely active in directing this project and we are thankful to chairman Mike Currin, Jim Merritt and Clayton Darnall for their direction and efforts toward Room At The Inn.  We are also thankful to churches from our area and different parts of North Carolina, even as far as Tennessee , who have made their way to Union Mission to work on the property.  

We are completing the plumbing, which has been a major surprise to our team.    Next we must tackle the heating and air conditioning system that needs repair/replacement.   Once these tasks are complete we will paint, put down floor covering, and furnish Room At The Inn.   We anticipate the completion of this project late November or December.  

What will the program look like once we begin?

It will follow very much the same programming that our men’s program follows.   Bible Study, Confilct management, life skills, job counseling and lots of love and affirmation in the name of Christ.   Our Executive Director, LaCount Anderson, will begin working with volunteers who have come forth to participate in the programming of Room At The Inn.   We anticipate approximately six homeless women to participate in the program of Room at the Inn which will include children.   Much needs to be done to prepare and we ask for you to remember us daily as we look with anticipation to this new dimension of Union Mission; celebrating our 65^th year of ministry to the people of the Roanoke Valley.
